Why Professional Services Firms Need a New Approach for Threat Management

Professional services firms are under siege. There are over 4000 cyberattacks every day. That is 170 per hour or 3 attacks every minute, many of which are some type of phishing attack. Part of the reason professional services firms — and law firms in particular — are being singled out by hackers is because the information they manage makes them very attractive targets.

Historically, firms have tried to protect themselves by securing the perimeter. Perimeter defenses such as firewalls, reverse proxies, and demilitarized zones were a way of building a wall around the organization to prevent someone on the outside from getting in. Unfortunately, building a higher wall does not protect you from a hacker that has obtained valid credentials via a phishing attack. The hacker can ignore the wall and walk through the front door. Nor does a high wall protect you from someone who is already on the inside and has plans to access information they shouldn’t.

The enterprise security stack needs to evolve to the next level, and technologies like machine learning and adaptive behavioral modeling are helping it get there.
